The phylum Annelida consists of over 22,000 species.
Some annelids are capable of regeneration. If they are cut in half, they can grow into two new worms.
Their blood contains hemoglobin that turns it the color red, just like humans!
Most annelids will die if their skin dries out, that is why they like moist environments.
Even though annelids do not have eyes they can sense light.
Key Characteristics:
Segmented: the body consists of repeated identical segments.
Body: have a true body cavity, complete digestive system, nervous system and brain.
Respiration: they breathe through their skin since they lack lungs.
Reproduction: some have separate sexes while others are hermaphroditic, meaning they have both male and female sex organs.
Symmetry: bilateral
Categories of Annelids
Body plan can be divided straight down the middle into two halves, with a matching right and left half.
Though they are worms, annelids have very complex anatomies that have organs and highly developed organ systems.
